  • Year 1: Opal Class

Miss Burrows, Mrs Pickworth and Miss Scales

    Summer 1

This term our topic is Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, with a particular focus on seaside holidays from the past and present. Children will be exploring plants in Science and will be learning about the United Kingdom in Geography.

    Parent engagement:

We will be inviting parents into school this term for a Phonics Screening Check event. Further details to follow.

    General reminders:

Children will be given a Little Wandle Phonics reading book on a Monday and these will be collected back in on a Friday. New Little Wandle Phonics reading books will then be issued the following Monday.

Children will also have a reading record where adults can record when they have read with their child. Please try and aim to read with your child at least 3 times a week. Opal class adults monitor reading records so if you read with your child please could you or your child put a smiley face or sticker in the reading record so we know that they have been reading at home.

Children will also be given a sharing book – this is a book that the children can choose from our reading garden. This is for them to share with an adult, friend or sibling to develop their enjoyment of reading. Sharing books will be given out on a Monday evening and collected the following Monday so they can be shared over the weekend. Sharing books are changed during the week if children have already finished their chosen books.

    Spellings:

Children will be given a Little Wandle Home Learning sheet but their Friday spellings for that week will be circled, meaning children only need to practice 6 words. If you have any issues with learning the spellings at home, feel free to ask for ideas.

We will continue to monitor the scores in school and we appreciate the effort that parents are making to practice these at home with your children.

    Clothing:

Please make sure any jumpers or coats are named so that we can return them to the children. We ask that children take their water bottles home at the end of each school day.

    Ralph and Ralphina:

Ralph and Ralphina are our class mascots and they love to go on adventures. They will each be going home with one child each week on a Friday. Please may you return them on Monday. They come with their own backpack and adventure book. Therefore, it would be great if you could help your child to write/draw about the adventures they went on with Ralph and Ralphina so they can then share with the rest of the class what they got up to.

    PE days:

PE is on a Wednesday morning and a Friday morning this term.  For PE lessons, children should bring an indoor and outdoor PE kit for the cooler summer mornings.
