Quartz Class – Year 6

Quartz represents Power, Energy and Clarity.
In year 6 these are great things to aim for!

About Quartz Class – Year 6

Spring Term 2024

Happy New Year!

We are well settled into the year now and the children have an important term ahead of them.  We will be expecting hard work and commitment from them as we start to gear up to our end of KS2 assessments in May (SATS)!

The children will be expected to complete homework tasks and learn their times tables and spellings at home.  Extra time can always be allowed for homework with a quick parent chat with me!

Some of the other topics that we will be covering are:

Science

HABITATS AND CLASSIFICATION and INHERITANCE, ADAPTATION AND EVOLUTION

Quartz class will be learning about ‘Variation, Adaptation, Inheritance & Evolution’ this term. They will explore how both Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace separately developed their theories of evolution. They will examine the scientific evidence from plants and animals that has been gathered to support the theory of evolution.  The children will also learn about DNA and genetics and how important the effects of inherited genes can be.

Building on their previous work, we will be looking further at ‘Humans and Living Things and their Habitats’ – looking at how an environment may provide different habitats, and for which creatures.  We will move to learn about classification and taxonomy, including the work of Carl Linnaeus.

History

QUEEN VICTORIA & HER CORONATION

The children will learn about Queen Victoria’s childhood leading up to her coronation, and the ceremony itself. We will discover some of the key events during her reign.  There will be a walk around the village to see the Jubilee Alms houses and other features of Victorian architecture in the local area. We will link this to our Geography skills – looking at commonwealth countries/ capitals

Geography

DIFFERENT CLIMATES (BIOMES/RAINFORESTS/CLIMATES/DESERTS)
The children will build on previous knowledge of the water cycle, coasts and rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes as we learn about climate zones and biomes.  The children will conduct a project based on research using maps, globes, atlases, and websites based on a particular biome.

The children will also be completing DT sessions, music, PSHE and ICT!

General information

  • The children have access to the water fountains at break times. If your child feels that they will need water to drink during lesson time, then they will need a water bottle for inside the classroom.  We would prefer if this is a little transparent, so that we can see it’s water (there’s always one sneaky child trying to sneak in juice, and it makes an awful sticky mess if spilt!)
  • In the first half term, PE will be swimming on Tuesdays and PE on Monday.
Please ensure your child has correct PE kit:

Trainers (outdoors)

Plimsolls (indoors)

Blue shorts

Blue/white t-shirt

PE socks

Tracksuit bottoms and top (for colder weather)

Hair bobble (for those with lovely long locks!)

SWIMMING: Suitable swimsuit, towel, hair bobble, swimming hat

  • Pencil cases. We would be really grateful if we can make sure that these are an appropriate size and fit into trays.
  • If you need to speak to us about anything, please always feel free to catch Miss Reid or Mrs Doran after school, or make an appointment through the school office.
  • The class’ ‘Golden Pass’ reward this term will be voted on and chosen by the children. All children who have not lost more than 5 minutes in any given week this half term (and therefore kept all their Golden Passes) will be able to take part in the reward. It will be in the week before we break up for February half term holiday.

Many thanks for your continued support,

Miss Reid & Mrs Doran

(In Year 6, we have two teachers. Miss Reid teaches every day and Mrs Doran teaches in mornings and helps us in some afternoons.)

Miss Reid Recommends!
Suitable for Yr 6 upwards and for confident readers. Utterly brilliant, packed with magic (Sorry, 'arcanery'), danger and friendship. Even adults will love it! Also currently free to listen on audible with a subscription!
(I'm now on book 2 and addicted!)

A big THANK YOU to our super Winchelsea family for supporting our recent book fair!
Your love of reading & generosity means that together, we spent just over £990! This earns us £495 in Scholastic reward points to spend on books. Amazing! Thank you!

There's been some significant signalling issues at King's Cross station. As a result we're currently on a different route home and will be back in Ruskington a little later. Will message via Twitter our ETA as soon as we arrive in Peterborough.

Good Evening Winchelsea Family! The School Book Fair starts tomorrow! Whoop! See you there!
**Please remember that Scholastic have not sent a card machine this time (!!), so please bring pennies, or buy vouchers online, or be ready to scan a QR code on the day to pay online.**

Quartz Class had a brilliant last session swimming yesterday!! Yet again, we've had such lovely comments from our swimming instructors about how fabulous we have been: polite, determined and really positive! The children have worked hard to improve & have made us proud 🏊‍♀️🤩
